People and Their Houses 家 – 人 is part of the Digital Kunshan Archive project sponsored by Duke Kunshan University’s Humanities Research Center. It aims to explore the dynamics among the residents of the houses, the houses, and Kunshan, discoursing the cultural conflicts and integration brought by modern interprovincial and international migration in the region of Kunshan.
We selected five target families with different backgrounds and social-economic statuses and arranged interviews and visits. All families shared personal stories of moving and migration – why they choose these specific locations to reside in Kunshan and how they identify themselves as “Modern Kunshanese“. Conversations also cover a wide rage of other interesting topics like personal taste for house decorations, children education and the notion of “family”. Each house and family we visit represents a unique piece of the characteristics of Kunshan, which serves as windows for the social and cultural context in modern Kunshan.
The project outcome includes around 50 photographs and one-hour long interview videos’ footage for each family and a written report. Report is posted on the Digital Kunshan Archive website with other digital humanities projects, with all 5 locations of houses highlighted in a digital map of Kunshan.
